The oldest inland club in the North East

With its rolling and undulated terrain set within mixed woodland, the course provides an enjoyable and testing challenge for golfers of all levels, with each hole possessing its own distinctive character.

There are many memorable holes - some for the challenge they pose and others for the view that they provide.

The 13th, is one of the most difficult on the course. "the Coffin" it demands a high degree of accuracy off the tee and on the approach to the rectangular green. The 18th, meanwhile, will live on in the memory for the superb view of the sun reflecting on the church steeple.

How to play No. 1

The first at Tyneside can be a challenging hole when there is a westerly wind. At 351 yards (white tees) it is not the longest but it does require a good uphill drive to take you over the ridge and to the right hand side of the fairway which should leave you a 7 or 8 iron to a sloping green.

How to play No. 2

The second is a tough 468 yard (white tees) par 4 with out of bounds all down the left. A good drive will leave you short of the pond, the approach to the green may require a rescue or fairway wood to a green that has three bunkers to the right hand side.

How to play No. 3

The third, a 387 yard (white tees) par 4, requires an uphill drive to the left centre of the fairway. This should leave you a 7 or 8 eight iron to the green which slopes away to the left - bunkers protect the right hand side.

How to play No. 4

The fourth is another shortish par 4 at 389 yards (white tees) with a blind tee shot over the marker post. A good drive down the hill should leave you an 8 or 9 iron to a fairly flat green. Bunkers protect the green left and right - avoid going long at all cost.

How to play No. 5

The par 4 fifth, 389 yards (white tees), has a sloping fairway to the right and requires a good drive over the hill. A well hit tee shot should leave you a fairly level stance and a 5 or 6 iron to a level green with bunkers left and right.

How to play No. 6

The sixth at Tyneside is one of the hardest par 3s around. At 195 yards (white tees) and with out of bounds all along the left it requires a well struck tee shot to find the tiered green with bunkers guarding the right hand side. If faced with a Westerly wind you can be faced with faiway woods or even driver off the tee, on a calm day a 3 or 4 iron is normally required.

How to play No. 7

The seventh is a par 5 at 521 yards (white tees) and mostly down hill on the second shot - you should be thinking birdie here. A good drive will leave you the option of going for the green in two or laying up with a 6 or 7 iron. Laying up should leave you at the top of the ridge for a 70 or 80 yard pitch to the green which has a depression in front and bunkers left and right.

How to play No. 8

The eight is a par 4 of only 343 yeards (white tees) but can be tricky if you don't get your drive away as there are trees left and right off a sloping fairway. A good drive should leave you only a gap or sand wedge to the green which slopes left to right and can be very quick in summer.

How to play No. 9

The ninth is a fairly short par 3 at 152 yards (white tees) and slightly uphill to a fairly flat green. A 6 or 7 iron may be required to the middle/right of the green as there are three bunkers to the left.

How to play No. 10

From the elevated tee you can see everything in front of you. It requires a good drive to carry the stream. Two good shots won't leave you too far short of a well bunkered green that can be faster than the other greens.

The views from this green are excellent - Ryton and Close House golf courses can be seen.

How to play No. 11

Again, from the elevated tee you can see everything in front of you on this Par 4. A good drive short of the stream will leave only a short iron to a large green. Beware the out of bounds ravine that cuts into the right side of the green.

How to play No. 12

Time for a rest! One of the best views on the course from this tee. A good Par 3 where club selection is very important to carry the ravine and hit this green. A par is a good result on this hole.

How to play No. 13

The Coffin - the signature hole of the course. A good drive to the left half of the fairway leaves a difficult second shot (as the bottom of the flag is not always visible) to the coffin shaped green that is well guarded on the left side by a number of bunkers. A par is an excellent result on this hole.

How to play No. 14

A testing short part 4 where a good drive (blind) will leave you with a short iron to a long green. The second shot is always further than you think with bunkers front and on the right side of the green. Be satisfied with a par as you walk to the next tee.

How to play No. 15

The 15th is a short par 4 at just over 280 yards (white tees). A good drive will leave you a short pitch to the green that slopes back to front. An internal out of bounds runs all down the right of the hole. This hole is a genuine birdie chance.

How to play No. 16

The 16th is a difficult par 3 with out of bounds beyond the green and bunkers waiting for any shot coming up short, right or left. Depending on wind conditions club selection can be difficult. A par is a good score here.

How to play No. 17

A testing par 4 where a good drive will leave only a mid-iron to a large green. Once there though, three putts are easy on this large green, as you walk to the last tee, again, be happy with a par.

How to play No. 18

A good finishing hole as you turn back to the clubhouse. A good drive on the Church spire will leave a second shot that is difficult to judge as it is further than you think. The green slopes fron right to left in your quest for a closing par.

Now to the 19th hole and time to relax - we hope you enjoyed your visit and look forward to welcoming you back soon.
