About Tyneside Golf Club
The course has been relocated on two occasions, each time moving a little higher up the valley slopes or "falls" of Ryton. The current layout was designed almost a century ago by renowned golf course architect Harry S Colt, who has a considerable portfolio to his name including St. Andrews' Eden Course and Wentworth.
The course has been extended over the years but is still relatively short by comparison to many other Colt designs proving that accuracy remains the greater challenge to length. Of further challenge are the many undulations which test the golfer's skills. Tyneside's sand based fairways are invariably smooth, but rarely flat!
There are many memorable holes. The Sun reflecting on the church steeple and the welcoming clubhouse pavilion as you stroll homeward down the eighteenth is a memory many take away. Others may dwell on their memories of playing the tricky thirteenth hole. Nicknamed "the coffin", this hole demands a high degree of accuracy both off the tee and into the long, rectangular green if your card isn't to face a sudden demise!
Our course is one of the most highly rated in the North East of England. This is not only because of its layout and condition, but also because it drains so freely and is available for play when other courses have to close. The course also overwinters remarkably well and we rarely use temporary greens.
Introduction
from our Lady Captain
The course is a good test of golf but also very beautiful at all times of year. Most holes have views of the Tyne Valley and the river winding through it. Although the course and golf are naturally very important to me I feel it is equally important that I feel very comfortable and "at home" in our historic clubhouse.
I would recommend Tyneside to anyone looking for a good game of golf in a forward looking club that has some great plans for the future!
